Light and airy orange meringue cookies, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients

- 4 large egg whites
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- 1/2 teaspoon orange extract (optional)
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200°F (93°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Separate the egg whites from the yolks while the eggs are cold, then let the whites come to room temperature.
- Beat the egg whites on medium speed until foamy. Add cream of tartar and salt.
- Increase mixer to high speed and add sugar one tablespoon at a time, beating until stiff, glossy peaks form.
- Gently fold in the orange zest and optional orange extract.
- Transfer meringue into a piping bag with a star tip. Pipe small swirls onto the baking sheets.
- Sprinkle with extra orange zest if desired.
- Bake for 1 hour. Then turn off the oven and leave cookies inside with the door ajar for 1 hour to fully dry.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
Notes
- Make sure egg whites are free of yolk for best results.
- Optional: use a flavored extract for variation.
