Description

A rich, savory beef gravy perfect for serving over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (lean or regular)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour/cornstarch as substitute)
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil (for sautéing)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp thyme (fresh or dried)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp paprika

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add a splash of oil and cook the ground beef until nicely browned, breaking it apart with a spatula to ensure even cooking and prevent clumps. Drain excess fat if desired.
  2. Add chopped onions to the pan with the cooked beef and cook until they soften and turn translucent. Toss in minced garlic and stir for another minute until fragrant but not burned.
  3. Sprinkle flour evenly over the beef and onion mixture, stirring constantly to coat everything, which will help thicken the gravy later. Cook the flour for about 1-2 minutes to remove any raw taste.
  4. Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps, allowing the gravy to thicken and bubble. Add salt, pepper, and any optional herbs or sauces like Worcestershire sauce to deepen the flavor.
  5. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally until the gravy reaches your desired thickness. Taste and adjust seasoning before serving over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Notes

  • This gravy can be made gluten-free by using cornstarch or gluten-free flour as a substitute.
  • Adjust seasoning based on taste preference.
  • Leftover gravy can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days.
